Award winning Architectural Designer Glenn Murdoch from Theca Architecture based in Christchurch is passionate about architecture as a means of delivering health and comfort. Aligning with eHaus and the designHaus is a great fit for Glenn and his team as working to the Passive House principles is something that he has been doing in the region very well since 2010.
‘We have a fundamental belief that buildings must not only perform well but offer families a smart, comfortable and healthy space to enjoy life in’ says Glenn.
The design phase of a Passive House is key, as ensuring things like site orientation and solar gain, glazing and shade is very carefully considered. While at the same time focusing on design and aesthetics to meet the clients brief. Having a professional designer who understands the key principles is critical and Glenn has all the right experience and qualifications to offer architectural excellence and the form and function of a Passive House space. Glenn describes his style as “I love working with simple forms and a simple palette of natural materials”

Opposing rectangular volumes and a weathered timber exterior gives this home a ‘beach bach’ feel. Sitting high on the hill above Sumner in Christchurch, the large overhangs extend the living spaces to the outside so the incredible views of Sumner, Pegasus Bay and the Kaikōura mountains can always be enjoyed. The design is very compact, but the living spaces are generous with the addition of the covered exterior deck.
