From Building Code Minimums to Exceptional Living: Peter and Arlene's eHaus Story

When Peter and Arlene set out to build their new home overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, they knew one thing for certain - they wanted something better than a standard New Zealand home.

Like many homeowners, they understood that meeting the minimum requirements of the Building Code wasn't enough to deliver the comfort, durability and healthy living environment they were looking for. What they didn't know was exactly how to achieve it.

That changed the day they stepped inside an eHaus.

Discovering a Better Way to Build

Their turning point came during an eHaus open home in Oakura, while the house was still under construction.

Without the internal linings installed, Peter and Arlene could see the building science behind an eHaus for themselves - from the thicker insulated wall framing to the Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system that quietly delivers fresh, filtered air throughout the home.

"It was a real eye-opener," Peter recalls. "We could actually see what was possible. The eHaus Taranaki team were incredibly knowledgeable, and it gave us confidence that they knew exactly what they were doing."

That experience confirmed they had found the right building partner.

A Home That Feels Different

Watching the home come together was exciting, but it wasn't until moving in that Peter and Arlene truly appreciated what high-performance living meant.

"The house feels very different from a standard build," says Peter.

"It's incredibly quiet and peaceful in every room. In winter it's warm and dry, and in summer it's cool and calm."

One of the first things they noticed was something many New Zealand homeowners simply accept as normal - wasn't there anymore.

"It's lovely to wake up on a cold morning and have absolutely no condensation on the windows."

Comfort You Can Feel Every Day

Now experiencing their first full winter in their eHaus, Peter and Arlene say the most remarkable thing is how consistent the indoor environment remains.

"Every room has the same stable temperature, day and night, summer and winter."

The filtered fresh air supplied through the home's ventilation system creates an indoor environment that feels clean and comfortable all year round.

"From inside, it's difficult to tell what the weather is doing outside."

Even during strong winds and storms, the home remains remarkably quiet.

"It's definitely very peaceful inside."

Designed Around the Way They Live

Beyond performance, thoughtful design has made the home a joy to live in.

Their favourite space isn't just one room - it's the way the home connects together.

The carefully positioned windows frame beautiful views across the private courtyard and out towards the river, while allowing sunlight to move through the home throughout the day and across the seasons.

The north-facing office has quickly become a favourite place to relax, with its window seat capturing winter sunshine while remaining shaded in summer. Looking through the home from the entrance, across the office and out towards the eastern landscape creates a view that Peter and Arlene enjoy every day.

One of the highlights of the entire journey came when they first saw the architect's concept.

"We realised we could have a sheltered north-facing courtyard while still making the most of the river views."

Advice for Future Homeowners

Looking back, Peter believes many New Zealanders simply don't realise how much better a home can be.

"We didn't understand just how basic the minimum Building Code standards are."

"For a home you'll love living in for years to come, you need a better standard of construction - especially when it comes to insulation, ventilation and temperature control."

Their advice for anyone considering an eHaus?

"If you want a comfortable home that performs beautifully every day, building an eHaus is a great way to achieve it."

Experience the eHaus Difference

Peter and Arlene's story is a reminder that great homes are about far more than appearance. They're about how they make you feel every single day.

Warm in winter. Cool in summer. Fresh filtered air. Quiet, peaceful spaces. Beautiful architecture backed by building science.

That's the difference a high-performance home can make.
