Chay’s journey into high-performance home building began at 16 in the UK, where he trained under experts in low-energy construction. Driven by a desire to provide a safer and warmer lifestyle for his young family, he relocated to New Zealand in 2007. In 2010, he launched his own construction company, serving the Kapiti and Wellington regions. By 2017, Chay shifted his focus to high-performance housing, teaming up with Erwin to form Matai Homes Ltd.
Erwin, who started his apprenticeship at just 15, went on to study structural engineering and project management. In Germany, he gained experience in sustainable and Passive House projects before moving to New Zealand in 2005 for more family time and an outdoor lifestyle. With a background in managing large commercial projects, Erwin transitioned to high-performance housing in 2017 and partnered with Chay to help elevate New Zealand's residential building standards.
Together, we build every home with precision, ensuring top-tier quality, energy efficiency, and seamless project delivery. Our homes stay on budget and on schedule, exceeding our customers expectations. We take pride in sharing our passion for passive and high-performance homes with our clients, who are just as enthusiastic about creating healthier, more sustainable living spaces.

This a small but perfectly formed eHaus is nestled in a private retreat away from the business of life. It has all you need including 3 bedrooms and an amazing private outdoor area linking directly to the internal living space. With all of the normal eHaus features and some extras this home has a very light footprint on the planet and generates most of the electricity that is needed to run the home through the year. "From the time we had our kick off meeting… About 20th March... basically we came out of Consent on the 21st of July, so been a four month process. Working together between the design and the builder and ourselves, very tightly together, has been the right way to go"– Robin
